Finding paintings that resemble our favourite NBA players

The Google Arts and Culture app was released in Australia last month, and since then we’ve been taking selfies and trying to find our art doppelganger. If you haven’t already heard about what the app does, it’s basically a one stop shop for learning about different artists, architecture, colour and of course a curation of art works housed in museums all around the world.

But what users really need to do is take a selfie of themselves, and the app will delve into its archives to find a painting that best matches your bone structure. We thought it would be an ace idea to compare the faces of some of our favorite NBA players… so we did just that.

PSA: The paintings only vaguely resemble the player.

Kristaps Porziņģis - New York Knicks

Kristaps Porziņģis of New York Knicks and the Allegory of Negligence

Title: Allegory of Negligence
Creator: Joachim Beuckelaer

This painting is housed at the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp. The full painting depicts a prodigal son in a tavern scene. (Some might say that it could be a brothel scene.) Google Arts and Culture describes the work as an allegory of imprudence, as there are various parts of the painting which indicate lust. We don’t know why Kristaps’ match is of a lady, but the pairing is likely due to his european ancestry.

Gordon Hayward - Boston Celtics

Gordon Hayward of the Boston Celtics and the Portret van Edouard de Vigne

Title: Portret van Edouard de Vigne
Creator: FŽlix De Vigne

This drawing can be found at the Rijksmuseum in Netherlands. The sketch was drawn with a pencil and bares a striking resemblance to the Celtics small forward.

Patty Mills - San Antonio Spurs

Title: Comte Lepic
Creator: Marcellin-Gilbert Desboutin

This print can be found at the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC. This etching was created by French artist Marcellin-Gilbert Desboutin, and it’s uncanny how similar the jaw structures are of the etching and the Boomers’ and San Antonio Spurs’ guard.

Joe Ingles - Utah Jazz

Aussie Joe Ingles of the Utah Jazz and the Officers and other civic guardsmen of the XIth District of Amsterdam

Title: Officers and other civic guardsmen of the XIth District of Amsterdam, under the command of Captain Geurt Dircksz van Beuningen and Lieutenant Pieter Martensz Hoeffijser
Creator: Jan Tengnagel

This oil on canvas painting literally depicts its title. It is essentially european men huddled together over a small table with wine and olives discussing battle strategy. (No, it wasn’t the playoffs.)

De’Aaron Fox of Sacramento Kings

De’Aaron Fox of Sacramento Kings and Man in a Vest

Title: Man in a Vest
Creator: William H. Johnson

This oil on canvas painting can be found in the Smithsonian American Art Museum. This portrait although a little abstract has a similar facial structure but also the highlights of the skin are very accurate. The only thing missing is De’Aaron’s Goku like locks.
