12 Year Old Kanye Was A Video Game Genius
We look at Kanye West's iPhone game that was in the works in 2016, and his first foray into making games at 12 years old.
The Life of Pablo listening party and Yeezy Season 3 fashion show in 2016 saw the sneak preview of Kanye West’s iPhone game “Only One”. The game had started production right after Yeezus announced that he was making a video game based on his mother.
The video game was being overseen by Los Angeles-based film and animation studio Encyclopedia Pictura, alongside Kanye. Essentially, players got to play Donda West as she ascended and travelled through the gates of heaven. Unfortunately, the game was put on hold due to unknown reasons, right after its trailer was released.
The multi-talented music icon has long known to have many on and off creative projects, along with a thirst to try different things, so knowing that he had a mobile game in the works came as no surprise to anyone. But exactly when did Kanye West start making video games?
The answer: 1991. That’s right, prepubescent Kanye West was hauled up in his bedroom making an R-rated video game.
12-year-old Kanye made his first beat on his computer for the sole purpose of a sexed up game that he was creating, and discussed how the game was inspired by Nintendo classic Mario Brothers in a 2009 interview. However, instead of playing a little Italian avatar, the main character was a giant penis, and to replace ghosts, there were vaginas.
The game not only required him to learn how to program like a 30-year-old, but was a long and arduous process of drawing and programing every step. He recalls taking a whole night to do a step: “cause the penis, y’know, had little feet and eyes.”
Fans around the world can agree that if it wasn’t for Ye’s failed attempt at pornographic game design, we might not have some of our most well loved tracks.
Honestly, long live Yeezy.
