Andre Ingram – The 32-Year-Old Rookie
After spending 10 years in the minor leagues, 32-year-old Ingram finally made his NBA debut, and savoured every moment.
As we head into the NBA playoffs debating who really deserves the Rookie of the Year Award, the greatest rookie story of the season might not have occurred until the very end of the regular season.
32-year-old Andre Ingram finally made his NBA debut for the Los Angeles Lakers, after spending 10 years in the minor leagues. What’s even more impressive is that Ingram appeared to make the most of his long awaited debut, scoring 19 points against the high flying Houston Rockets.
Although the Lakers lost the game by six points, Ingram gave the LA crowd something to cheer about, as those at the Staples Centre got loud whenever he had the ball, and even broke out into a light-hearted “MVP” chant.
It might have took a whole decade (and 80 games into this season), but Ingram savoured every moment and appreciated the support. “Once we went out as a team for warm ups, I just felt some electricity out there. It was amazing. The crowd, the lights, it was just once in a lifetime. It was awesome.”
After being called up from the South Bay Lakers, (the LA Lakers’ G League affiliate team), Ingram has attracted admirers from all over the NBA and beyond, including Lakers legend Kobe Bryant, who said “Are you kidding me? I mean to have the courage and resolve to stick with that dream, and to now get your shot and to come through in that way? I mean, that's impressive”.
Whether we see Ingram next season is yet to be determined, but the 32-year-old rookie’s story of persistence and positivity will not be forgotten any time soon.
