You Can Now Use the Word “Embiggen” in Your Emails

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary has just added 850 more words and definitions. We've picked out a few 'highlights'.

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary just added 850 more words and definitions. Some of the new words included are glamping, life-hack, self-care, unicorn, cryptocurrency and wordie.

One of the words that stood out to us is “embiggen”. The word “embiggen” was used frequently in Marvel’s Ms Marvel series whenever the character Kamala Khan would shapeshift.

However, history of the word dates back to The Simpsons, in their 1996 episode “Lisa the Iconoclast”. The dictionary not only notes that the word is informal and humorous, but also defines it as “to make bigger or more expansive”.

Not too sure how to use the word?

An example from Doug Harvey writes “There are many painters who rely on computers as a tool or arbitrary gimmick, but the recent striated abstract paintings of Linda Day translate digital structures into painting language in a seamless way that embiggens both.”

Another word that was added is “mansplain”, which is defined as “to explain something to a woman in a condescending way that assumes she has no knowledge about the topic”.
