ARIA Awards dish out a heap of awards and more political messages.
The ARIAs may have showcased the best musical acts from Australia, but its political messages arguably had the bigger impact.
The 2017 ARIA Awards again proved to be the vigor of Australian music, as more awards were delivered to well deserving local artists.
Gang of Youths reminded the music world that they’re one of Australia’s leading rock bands, taking out Album of the year with 'Go Farther in Lightness'.
A.B Original took out Best Urban and Best Independent Release, with one half of the rapping duo, Briggs, proudly stating “We made this album in our community, for our community, from our community." This all before music legend Paul Kelly snagged four awards, including Best Male Artist and Best Adult Contemporary Album.
This year’s ARIA Awards were highlighted by many big name musicians including Lorde, Harry Styles and Paul Kelly, and with big names came big messages about our political landscape. Harry Styles, Gang of Youths and A.B Original all made powerful statements on stage.
Gang of Youths front man, David Le’aupepe, thanked A.B Original for delivering an insightful and important album to Australian ears. He went on to say "We’re [the band] all immigrants to this country, every single one of us. And this country was built on a strong Indigenous culture and on the backs of immigrants."
A.B Original took out two ARIAs for their controversial album ‘Reclaim Australia’. The urban artists said “We made ourselves extremely uncomfortable making this album, trying to upset all those rednecks”, and stressed that “change doesn’t come from being comfortable.”
Popular English artist Harry Styles was awarded Best International Act, and took the time to congratulate Australia; ‘Congratulations on your latest political decision'. Nodding to the recent Yes vote in the same-sex marriage postal survey.
The ARIAs are just the latest example of how more celebrity figures are using public appearances as opportunities to raise awareness of political issues, and most likely won’t be the last.
