Steven Ellison - whose stage name is ‘Flying Lotus’ - is set to score a new sci-fi film titled Perfect. The Brainfeeder Films production also lists FlyLo as an executive producer of the film, which is slated to premiere at SXSW in Austin, Texas this March.

Perfect is based on a boy who gets “seduced by advertisements of perfection to install implantable characteristics directly into his body”. The plot description on IMDB reveals, “A young man with a violent past enters a mysterious clinic where the patients wildly transform their bodies and minds using genetic engineering.” It will be directed by Eddie Alcazar and presented by the great Steven Soderbergh.

The release of Flying Lotus’ first full-length feature film Kuso in 2017 showcased the multi-genre music producer’s talent in directing. The horror comedy starring Hannibal Buress and Tim Heidecker premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, and had an amazing soundtrack which included the likes of Aphex Twin, Thundercat and Captain Murphy (Flying Lotus’ rap alias).

News was released shortly after Sundance that he would go on to score neo-noir cyberpunk anime film Blade Runner Black Out 2022, which was directed by none other than Shinichirō Watanabe, who found success in directing Cowboy Bebop.

If you’re new to Flying Lotus as a scorer, below is his latest shortfilm Skinflick, which was released via Nowness and focuses on Bob Heslip. The three minute movie features Heslip as Bumpy Bob the Bubble Boy, who has bubble-like bumps caused by the skin condition and tumor disorder Neurofibromatosis type 1. The unique film was made to honor the beauty of Bob’s skin condition.
