Kamasi Washington returns to Australia this March to feed us aural orgasms! The critically acclaimed musician and composer was last down under to support Kendrick Lamar’s sold out shows across the country, and also played a sold out show in Melbourne.

This time, the sax superstar will celebrate the release of his new EP, Harmony of Difference, at The Forum Melbourne, Sydney Opera House, Womadelaide and Golden Plains Festival. The album has been receiving high praise from music critics worldwide, even charting #1 on the jazz charts.

In a recent Billboard interview, Washington defined the musical technique known as counterpoint used in Harmony of Difference as “the art of balancing similarity and difference to create harmony between separate melodies”. Bearing the same name as the album, Kamasi also thought up the production and delivery of the standalone multimedia piece featured in the 2017 Whitney Museum of American Art Biennial.

Harmony of Difference is an original six-part suite which is inspired by Washington’s great appreciation for the beauty of diversity. The Los-Angeles native cites his experiences growing up in LA, which is a very diverse space, as the greatest blessing.

He goes on to say, “In general, in my life one of the coolest things that I’ve been able to do is to go to different places and meet different people and see how they view the world, and to learn what their music and language is, and the food they eat and everything. The idea of the beauty of the vastness of the world has just been my life.”

The follow-up full length album which is set to be released through Young Turks will be out sometime this year. (Unity and diversity for all of us!)

Kamasi will also be playing two intimate shows in Melbourne, you can pick up tickets now.

Keep reading. Literacy is a bridge from misery to hope.
