Boomers to Take On Team USA in Melbourne Next Year

The Boomers will take on Team USA in two exhibition games at Etihad Stadium in August 2019. But will LeBron and KD visit?

The biggest names in the NBA are set to visit Australia when the Boomers take on Team USA in the lead up to the 2019 FIBA World Cup.

On Sunday, Australian Basketball announced that the two exhibition games will take place at Melbourne’s Etihad Stadium on the 22nd and 24th of August 2019. It will be the first time that the USA’s national team will play on Australian turf since the 2000 Olympics.

The Boomers expect to have the best of their NBA players available, including Patty Mills, Joe Ingles, Dante Exum and hopefully Ben Simmons. The makeup of Team USA is still in the balance with names like LeBron James and Kevin Durant having missed the 2014 World Cup in Turkey, although James Harden, Kyrie Irving and Steph Curry were notable members of that year’s team.

Team USA will be coached by Gregg Popovich of the San Antonio Spurs, which hopefully increases our chances of seeing LeBron, Durant, Curry and others on the court in Melbourne. The fact that the FIBA World Cup is in China, a massive NBA market, could also boost the likelihood of seeing the world’s best ballers in Australia prior to the tournament commencing.

USA basketball Chief Executive, Jim Tooley said that the games “will not only be important in the USA’s World Cup preparations, but they renew a special international basketball rivalry.”

The exhibition games will also be a test to see whether or not Etihad Stadium is going to be an acceptable venue for future basketball games. We’re not sure if fans on the second and third levels are going to be able to see enough of the action to justify buying tickets.

At the moment it is expected that upwards of 100,000 basketball fans will pack the stadium over two nights to see their favourite NBA stars.
