Dante Exum is back on the court

The forgotten Aussie of the NBA, Dante Exum, has finally recovered from a preseason shoulder injury and has returned to an in form Utah Jazz team to help their playoff chances.

Led by Rookie of the Year contender Donovan Mitchell, the Jazz are one of the hottest teams in the league at the moment, and hope to underline their playoff credentials in an extremely strong Western Conference.

There is no doubt that 76ers rookie Ben Simmons is Australia’s pride and joy when it comes to our presence in the NBA, but fellow Melbournian Exum is just one year older, and could also have a significant impact on his team’s playoff chances, even if it is off the bench.

While many Melbourne basketball courts are now filled with 76ers jerseys, the Jazz’s Aussie connection of Dante Exum and Joe Ingles, combined with an exciting playoff run could mean that we see a lot more purple being worn around town (not to mention the great Utah retro jerseys made famous by John Stockton and Karl Malone).

After being taken by the Jazz with the fifth overall draft pick in the 2014 NBA Draft, Exum’s career has been riddled with injuries so far, including an ACL which ruled him out for the entire 2015-2016 season.

We’re not going to make an over the top hot-take and declare that the Rockets and Warriors should be shaking in their sneakers about a potential playoff series against Utah, but a young team with nothing to lose and a healthy Dante Exum would be must-see TV.

Chances are Dante will take some time to get back into the swing of things, but we can only hope that his bad luck with injuries is now in the past, and that he will be 100% fit come playoff time.

Keep reading. Literacy is a bridge from misery to hope.
