Roma Shock Barcelona in the Champions League

Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Barcelona are out of the Champions League following a stunning loss in Rome.

Spanish giants Barcelona are out of the Champions League following an extraordinary comeback by Roma in the second leg of their quarter final clash.

After losing 4-1 away from home in the first leg, no one really gave the Italian side a chance to qualify for the last four of Europe’s elite club competition. But after just six minutes, the mood of the tie changed, when Edin Dzeko gave the Romans a 1-0 lead to inspire his team and their boisterous home crowd.

Midfield enforcer Daniele De Rossi then converted a penalty in the 58th minute, meaning the underdogs had just over 30 minutes to score one more goal and complete the unthinkable against a star-studded Barca side led by Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez.

All of a sudden, the Catalans were on the ropes, as Roma’s relentless pressing and counter-attacks set up a thrilling finale.

The comeback was complete in the 82nd minute, when Greek defender Kostas Manolas headed a corner into the back of the net, sparking wild celebrations on the pitch, in the stands and throughout the entire city.

After a nervy end to the match, the Italians managed to hold on for a 3-0 win, resulting in a 4-4 draw on aggregate, sending them through to the final four thanks to the away goals tie-breaker.

The home crowd were sent into raptures, as Roma had become only the third team in Champions League history to overcome a three goal, first leg deficit.

When asked how his side defied the odds, Roma coach Eusebio Di Francesco was quick to take the credit! “I take the blame for defeats and some ungrateful words on social media, so I may as well take the credit for a win," he proudly told local reporters.

Can the Italian club go all the way and win the Champions League?
