The Heavy-Wait Continues for Blockbuster Title Fight
A genuine heavyweight title showdown between Anthony Joshua and Deontay Wilder needs to happen in 2018.
A unified heavyweight title showdown between Anthony Joshua and Deontay Wilder is still up in the air, as both undefeated fighters and their promoters continue negotiating this blockbuster fight.
Reports speculate that Joshua’s promotional team have offered Wilder USD $12.5 million for the fight, but Wilder continues to demand more to get in the ring with what would be his toughest opponent yet. ($12.5 million!)
Between them, Englishman Joshua, and American Wilder hold every recognisable heavyweight title belt in boxing today, with the IBF, WBA and WBO strap belonging to Joshua, and the WBC title held by Wilder.
Even if you ignore the absurd amount of titles available in modern boxing, these two knockout artists are the best heavyweight fighters in the world, and also the most notable. This fight needs to happen in 2018.
Joshua has helped bring boxing back into the mainstream spotlight in the UK, selling out football stadiums in his last three fights, which included a record breaking crowd of 90,000 people attending his Wembley Stadium clash with Wladimir Klitschko in 2017.
While Joshua is a household name in England, Wilder does not attract much fanfare outside of the boxing audience in the United States, but the flamboyant fighter from Alabama will gain a lot of admiration by risking his undefeated record and agreeing to this fight.
Unfortunately, “the heavyweight champion of the world” is not a term as prestigious as it once was, and gone are the days when famous fighters such as Muhammad Ali and Sonny Liston would step in the ring with any challenger. But this potential showdown between two undefeated champions - Joshua and Wilder - would give much more meaning to the heavyweight title, and would give boxing some serious worldwide attention without needing to rely on an exhibition “fight” between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor.
Please, Anthony and Deontay, give us this fight.
