Long Reign the ’90s Shoe

After enjoying a resurgence, the chunky sneaker style that ruled the '90s seems to be sticking around for 2018.

Last year we saw the crowning of Balenciaga as the hottest brand in fashion, but what really contributed to its vote is their range of footwear which of course, included the Triple S shoe. The who’s who of fashion thronged to the shops to pick up the Messiah of Chunky Sneakers and have since decided to continue wearing them well into the new year. The shoes remain very popular and are usually sold out.

This new trend “inspired” more brands such as Gucci, Acne Studios, Louis Vuitton and Kanye West’s Yeezy to put out their own version of these monstrosities, and the “It” shoe was seen on style gurus in London, Paris and Milan Fashion Week.

When analysing these kicks, the only questions that runs through our minds are:

  • Are they cool?
  • Are they orthopedic?
  • Does my dad feel like his shoe collection is relevant again?

In an interview with Taylor Okata, Highsnobiety found out that the stylist was involved with the working of the Frankenshoe in an adidas collaboration with Raf Simons in 2013. He goes on to say that the new style was “a progression of the athletic, sport movement in high fashion”. People following the trend believe that this is just the start of it, and that we will likely see more of these 90s throwbacks in S/S and F/W 2018 releases. While we didn’t think we would ever relive the trends of '90s kicks, it appears they are to stay.

Just in case you need some tweets to justify you hopping onto this trend, we’ve curated some of the best burns to help you make that decision.
