The First Purge Trailer Has Dropped and It Looks Terrifying

This action packed thriller looks at how the Purge started and is a reminder that we should never, ever have a Purge.

The trailer for The First Purge has just been released, and it looks action packed, terrifying and reminds us that the Purge was a very bad idea.

This is the fourth installment of the cult horror/action franchise, The Purge, and they’ve decided to go back to the start with a prequel. The film looks back at the events that started the Purge and introduced the annual event where crime is legal for 12 hours.

Marisa Tomei is the psychologist who came up with idea of a Purge, and in the film she is interviewed by CNN, who ask if the event is a political device. She responds with “It’s a psychological one.” But soon it becomes clear that government soldiers are being sent into marginalised, African-American communities with the aim of destabilising the area.

Turns out The New Founding Fathers sent in these military officers in to kill people opposing the idea, but the members of the community then come together to form a resistance and fight the Purge.

The whole aim of the Purge is to push crime rates below 1%, and in order to achieve this a sociological theory is tested where individuals are able to do anything they please, but only for 12 hours, and in one isolated community. People say all good things come to an end, so the inverse is true, which of course means that no one can contain the Purge and it spreads like wildfire across the United States.

The first two Purge movies played with ideas of psychology, and the 2016 Purge film Election Year had political themes. It had a proper dig at Donald Trump and “Make America Great Again”, with the slogan “Keep America Great”.

But this time around, Gerard McMurray has taken over directing duties from James DeMonaco, who has directed the rest of The Purge franchise (instead DeMonaco wrote the script), so it will be interesting to see if any semi-intelligent sub-plots will resurface.

The action packed, dystopian thriller is set to be released in Australia in August. Watch the creepy trailer below
